Nothing can replace the feeling of walking into a local bookshop and experiencing the way someone else sees stories. Big retailers like Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million absolutely have their place. They’re essential, in my opinion, but they don’t carry quite the same spark as an independent bookstore. Where big chains focus on books as a business, local bookshops wear their hearts on their sleeves. They create an experience so evidently made by someone who loves stories.
If you’re looking for the best independent bookstores in Pittsburgh, here are some of my favorite local bookshops in and around the city.
White Whale Bookstore
This family-owned shop started as a pop-up stall, which is so cool and tells you everything you need to know about their passion for what they do. The shop is always clean, thoughtfully stocked, and beautifully organized. There’s also a cozy little café inside with amazing coffee to excuse extra wandering time.
They host everything from writing workshops to poetry nights to children’s story time, making it one of the most community-driven bookstores in Pittsburgh. It’s also just a short walk from one of my favorite brunch spots!
Stay Gold Books
This is an adorable shop with very cool, dream-seeking owners. I highly recommend taking a look at their story posted on their website to learn more about them. If you want to make connections with others through a love of reading, Stay Gold Books has a ton of book club options on its website!
This shop is located in Regency Square, which is home to many other cool shops and things to do!
Passionate Pages Bookstore
Passionate Pages is a relatively new shop located in Lawrenceville. It is on the smaller side, but houses an intentional selection of romance titles, along with other book-ish gifts. When I was there, they had some independently published books that I had never heard of, and I really appreciate that attention to detail and uniqueness when I am shopping for books!
Posman Books
This is one of my all-time favorites, and not just because of its location in the Strip District (though that helps). The layout of the shop encourages you to explore in a way that feels almost accidental. If you're used to places like Barnes and Noble, the layout should force you to explore the shop with a little more attention to detail.
I’ve found beautiful editions, locally published cookbooks, and some of the most fun staff picks here. They also have an ice cream shop inside that has the best selection!
Beyond Bedtime Books
I adore this place, but I’ll be honest, it can be a bit overwhelming. If you’re someone who loves the thrill of digging through shelves because you know there’s a hidden treasure waiting, I assure you that you won't leave disappointed.
The selection is massive, the prices are incredibly reasonable, and despite the packed shelves, you can tell the owners genuinely care about every single book and work hard to keep them in the best possible condition.
City of Asylum Bookstore
This shop is such a breath of fresh air. Their collection includes international and translated texts, which is not the priority in many other bookstores. You can find updated lists on their website. They're attached to a fantastic Italian restaurant, Cucina Alfabeto. Together, they host events for writers, book lovers, and much more.
Special Mention: Cleveland, Ohio's Loganberry Books
While not in Pittsburgh, this shop in Cleveland has one of the most impressive used book collections I’ve ever seen. I could have spent hours roaming every room of that bookstore and still not seen everything it has to offer. They have the coolest jellycat collection and care so deeply for the artists in their community.
Shop locally, and support anyone out there keeping physical media alive.
